Desde su creación la CTMFM desarrolla una amplia variedad de actividades de carácter científico, administrativo y normativo en relación con sus dos cometidos prioritarios: el manejo sustentable de los recursos pesqueros compartidos y la protección del ambiente marino de la Zona Común de Pesca Argentino-Uruguaya. La CTMFM es reconocida por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Agricultura y la Alimentación como el único organismo regional pesquero en el Atlántico Sudoccidental.
