Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) Information

DSDs are congenital conditions in which development of chromosomal, gonadal or anatomical sex is atypical. DSDs represent a diverse range of conditions, some of which are relatively common, including sex reversal, genital ambiguity, hypospadias, congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), and androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS). DSDs represent a major paediatric concern and a significant healthcare burden due to the direct clinical management of these conditions and also their common association with gonadal cancer and infertility. The cause of these problems is often a breakdown of the complex network of gene regulation responsible for proper development of testes or ovaries in the embryo. The website provides information regarding the causes, frequency and implications of DSD, in plain language, from a genetics and biology research perspective. It also includes detailed scientific and medical information for clinicians and scientists who work with children, adolescents and adults affected by DSD or intersex, or analyse the genetic causes.
