The first Melaka Museum, better known as the Picture School, began operating in 1954 as a result of the efforts and hard work of British officials and local people through the Melaka History Association and material assistance from the National Museum and is located in Jalan Kota, Melaka.Under the Enactment of the Melaka Museum Board 1954, various efforts were carried out including collecting and exhibiting the historical and cultural heritage of Melaka for local people and foreign tourists who visited. Day-to-day administration is handled by a voluntary Secretary with supervisory staff drawn from Melaka natives working at the National Museum, Kuala Lumpur.An amendment to the Enactment was made in 1984 to allow the field of museology to expand with the establishment of the Chief Executive of the Melaka Museum Board, namely the Curator.In line with the state government's aspirations for the museum field to be intensified along with Melaka as a state rich in historical heritage, the Enactment amendment was made, namely the Melaka Museum Corporation Enactment bil. 11 of 1992 which came into force on 1 March 1993.This establishment also allows the Chief Executive to be changed to the General Manager and this allows the Melaka Museum Corporation (PERZIM) to become a corporate body that can advance the field of museums in the context of education and tourism development.
