Methodist Church Nigeria
Meta Description
Methodist Church Nigeria is a product of the World-Wide evangelical re-awakening and holiness movement led by the Wesley brothers, John and Charles, after their ‘heart warmed’ experience in May, 1738. The Methodist movement was first encountered by African slaves in the United Kingdom and when slavery was abolished and on their return to Badagry and Abeokuta, Nigeria, seeing the spiritual darkness over the land sent letters to the Methodist authorities in Freetown, Sierra Leone, forwarded to London, requesting them to send missionaries to Nigeria in order to save the people of the land. In response to this call, the Rev Thomas Birch Freeman, was mandated at once to come to Badagry to champion the mission work in Badagry, South West Nigeria by the Wesleyan Missionary Society. Thomas Freeman along with his lay assistants, Mr and Mrs William de Graft set foot on Badagry on 24 September, 1842 thereby beginning the first Christian mission in Nigeria. Also, from the South South Nigeria, the Primitive Methodists came in through James Town on 4 March 1896, led by the Rev and Mrs T. T. Stone and an indigenous teaching evangelist called Mr Effah. The two Methodist mission groups came to form one entity in 1932 under the Methodist Church Britain Conference.
