Om het Nederlandse geheugen in beeld en geluid voor de eeuwigheid veilig te stellen, werd in 1997 het Nederlands Audiovisueel Archief (NAA) opgericht. Daarvoor was de audiovisuele collectie verdeeld over verschillende organisaties. In 2002 werd het NAA omgedoopt tot het Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld & Geluid. Vier jaar later, in 2006, opende toenmalig koningin Beatrix ons nieuwe, kleurrijke pand op het Media Park. In de loop van de jaren zijn wij geëvolueerd van een traditioneel audiovisueel archief tot een multidisciplinair media-instituut. Zo hebben we inmiddels een van de grootste media-archieven ter wereld, zijn we expert in media én een ontmoetingsplek voor jonge en oudere bezoekers.
